The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium welcomes the publication of the revised ITS Directive. The revised ITS Directive consolidates the regulatory environment for V2X in Europe. Europe is leading the deployment of basic short-range direct V2X services with 1.5 million vehicles deployed and more than 20.000 km of motorway equipped. The largest interoperable V2X operation world-wide.
Europe’s success rests on a regulatory C-ITS ecosystem that establishes cooperation and trust between all V2X actors. This ecosystem defines ‘Cooperative ITS’ (C-ITS), as V2X services are referred to in EU law. C-ITS serves transport safety, sustainable transport and traffic management. European radio regulation allocates 50 MHz of spectrum in the 5.9 GHz frequency band for basic and advanced C-ITS services for safety and automation across all EU Member States. The ITS Directive creates a legal basis for the already now operational EU security credential management system, which will run under the responsibility of the European Commission.
The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium is working closely with partners, such as the European road operators in the C-ROADS platform, on common specifications for advanced V2X services that rely on short-range direct communication.
The CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium is looking forward cooperating closely with C-ROADS, the European Commission and other stakeholders making C-ITS in Europe further develop.
The ITS Directive is a key milestone further nurturing the growth of C-ITS in Europe.
